Colorful graffiti art in the schoolyard

Since 2015, a group of young people between the ages of 14 and 20 have been working in Schelmengraben to beautify the neighborhood with graffiti art under the name "Cornflakes Crew". After exhibiting various works of art in Wiesbaden's town hall in the spring, the group also provided inspiration for the beautification project at the Alexej-von-Jawlensky School. With the support of graffiti artist Sebastian Schmidt, a total of ten pupils developed their own ideas, recorded them in the form of pencil sketches and then sprayed them on the façade after a little practice. The young artists received additional help with tips and tricks from two former participants of the "Cornflakes Crew", who now have many years of experience.

Make statements

Alexej von Jawlensky Integrated Comprehensive School is one of five "KulturSchulen" (culture schools) in Hesse. True to this motto, culture was the central theme of the graffiti campaign, which took place in cooperation with the Schelmengraben district center and AvJ's school social work. Cultural aspects such as Europe, peace, music and sport were taken into account in the design. For example, the hand depicted shows the peace symbol on the inside and the bird is designed in the colors of Ukraine - a statement of peace. The speech bubbles symbolize the different languages of the world. The European flag on the moon, on the other hand, expresses the longing for a united planet.
With this campaign, the young people are working together to spread the colorfulness of Schelmengraben and their school throughout Wiesbaden and make the city more colorful - true to the neighborhood claim: Schelmengraben - a colorful piece of Wiesbaden. The project is funded by the federal program "JUGEND STÄRKEN im Quartier" (JUSTiQ).

Incidentally, there are other works of graffiti art by the "Cornflakes Crew" to marvel at in Schelmengraben (see picture gallery). The surfaces provided by GWH on various garage buildings are decorated with astronauts or flying houses, for example.
