Elvira van Haasteren started her career at the Helene Lange School and moved to the Alexej von Jawlensky School in 2009. Originally from Baden-Württemberg, she moved to Hesse to continue her teaching career. "When I was asked to manage a new school in Schelmengraben , I didn't hesitate. The district had a bad reputation, but I was fascinated by the concept of an integrated comprehensive school," she explains.
She played a key role in developing the IGS concept and officially took over as principal in 2015. "It was an exciting time to help shape the school from the ground up and make the vision of a cultural school a reality."
Challenges and successes
During her time in office, Elvira van Haasteren faced numerous challenges, including the integration of refugee children. Language barriers had to be overcome and the children had to be given structure. However, she always emphasized the importance of a safe and culturally diverse learning environment. She is particularly proud of the Alexej von Jawlensky School's establishment as a cultural school. "It was impressive to see how the children blossomed through musical and artistic projects. The establishment of a keyboard room and regular theater performances had a lasting impact on school life."
A particular highlight for her was when the students said: "I love this school." These moments encouraged her in her work and showed her how important cultural activities are for the children's development. "It was wonderful to see how the pupils were able to discover new sides to themselves and develop their potential through art and music," she says.
Commitment and collaboration at Schelmengraben
From the principal's perspective, Schelmengraben has changed a lot in recent years, as has Alexej von Jawlensky School. "When I started, the school was in a poor state," says Elvira van Haasteren. Renovations and a new schoolyard design have continuously improved the appearance of the school. New school benches, donated by GWH, are one example of this.
The close cooperation between the school and the community in Schelmengraben was an essential part of van Haasteren's work. " Schelmengraben has developed into a lively and liveable district thanks to our joint efforts. Without the cooperation with local partners, many things would not have been possible," she emphasizes.
A look into the future
For the future, Elvira van Haasteren hopes that the Alexej von Jawlensky School will continue to consistently pursue its path as a cultural school. She wishes her successor a transparent relationship with the pupils and good cooperation with parents and the community in Schelmengraben. "I hope that my work will continue in the interests of the children, because it is important that the children feel comfortable and perceive the school as a place to live."
Her time at the Alexej von Jawlensky School has shaped her personally and professionally and she will always remember it fondly. Elvira van Haasteren is looking forward to her new chapter in life. "I'm looking forward to the opportunity to travel outside of the vacation season and to live out my passion for culture and theater more intensively," she says. She also plans to continue volunteering for the school. "As a member of the Friends' Association, I will work to ensure that the school continues to be supported. This school will always be a part of me," she concludes.
